What to Expect
Acupuncture is a safe and effective healing art backed by more than two thousand years of practice and research. It is used worldwide both as a primary and adjunctive treatment for a wide range of conditions (see below). Generally, people find an acupuncture treatment to be a relaxing experience. This is especially so after they get over any initial hesitation regarding needling. The information below is intended to provide you with basic information regarding what you might experience with your first visit to Divine Right Acupuncture with Tina Kellen, M.S., L.Ac., R.D.H..

Generally, your first visit is longer than your follow-up visits or at the very least it entails quite a bit of questioning. The initial questioning is a very important part of the care I will provide for you. You begin the process by filling out the intake forms available for download on the links below and we will review them together at your initial visit. While many of the questions may seem entirely irrelevant to your condition, they are asked for the purpose of guiding me to getting a better view of your “big picture” and to assess what your individual needs are. The answers you provide to the questions, along with other basic diagnostic tools such as looking at your tongue and feeling your pulse allow me to tailor the treatment specifically to you. I will also palpate your abdomen and corresponding meridians in order to get a sense of how your complaint manifests in your body. This individualization of the treatments is one of the strong points of acupuncture. It is why people may experience broad changes within themselves after receiving acupuncture for a specific complaint. It also means that the treatments can be modified over time. At the beginning of each visit we will discuss how we can work in tandem to reach the goals that you wish to achieve with your treatments.

The procedure is painless, unlike that of hypodermic needles which are hollow. Tiny, hair thin, filliform needles will be inserted into specific points on your body that have a relationship with, and help to restore balance to your disharmony. After the needles are inserted you will be encouraged to rest for a period of 10 - 30 minutes in order for the treatment to assimilate and reinstate harmony. Depending on the style used, the needles may be inserted quickly and removed immediately or they may be left in for a longer period of time. Sometimes the needles are stimulated manually to increase the effect of connecting to the body’s underlying natural energetic pathways or channels. The sensation of the needles usually feels similar to a heavy, distending or tingling feeling. Most people report that they feel intensely relaxed during acupuncture.

Once the needles are removed, you will be advised to avoid any strenuous activity so that your treatment can continue to integrate. It is after the needles are removed that the healing continues on a more profound level as your body begins to adjust physically, physiologically, emotionally and spiritually to a reconditioned way of being -before the disorder began. You will notice that your mind, body and spirit will begin to function on a higher vibration and that you have been restored to your Divine potential- the way you were intended be.

Treatment frequency will be determined on an individual basis, as each person has different needs. While many people will feel some change in their condition immediately or within the first 2-3 treatments, others with more serious or obstinate conditions will need many months of treatment before a significant change occurs. If you are not noticing any changes it does not mean that acupuncture is not helping you. Many times the changes are slow and somewhat subtle as the entire body begins to rebalance from the condition. During these initial stages an acupuncturist can usually gauge the relative effectiveness of the treatments through precise questioning and by monitoring subtle changes in your tongue and/or pulse.

It is recommended that you wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing or bring shorts and a tank to change into so that all of the meridians and acupuncture points are easily accessible for treatment.
